Q: What is HotDesk?

A: HotDesk is an Application Service Provider (ASP) that uses proprietary technology to bring you a complete Web site and Internet solution for your business including prewritten industry-specific content and a full library of images. Everything you need to build and maintain your business Web site is included and easy to use.

Q: What is an ASP (Application Service Provider)?

A: An application service provider is a company that provides access to applications hosted on its servers via the Internet or an Intranet.

Q: Do I need to know HTML?

A: No. The HotDesk application provides all the tools necessary to build a professional looking web site and an online store without you having to know any HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). However If you do know HTML you can add advanced features by using the custom HTML feature.

Q: Do I need to install any software on my computer?

A: No. All you need to edit your Web site is a PC that uses Windows and access to the Internet using Internet Explorer 5.5 (or a later version) because all of the HotDesk's tools and services run on our own servers.

Q: How soon will I be able to publish a Web site?

A: As soon as you click the Publish button. With each package option, HotDesk offers training for the application suite so that you are assured to have a professionally designed Web site working quickly. After completing the training you will have the ability to maintain and change your web site as often as you desire. Most sites are live within one (1) hour.

Q: How much disk space am I allowed?

A: The amount of disk space you are allocated is determined by the pricing plan you choose. The average HotDesk member uses 12 megabytes of disk space. Once you pass your allocated amount you will automatically be billed $1/month per 5MB storage.

A: Today more and more people are using the Internet not only to purchase products and services but to investigate those companies with whom they are contemplating doing business with. Q: How long is the contract?

A: Unlike other companies, HotDesk does not make you sign a long-term contract. There is a one time startup or establishment charge then the service runs month-to-month.

A: There is no comparison between what HotDesk offers and what you will receive for $39.95. Hosting your web site is a small and insignificant fraction of what HotDesk provides. We are an application service provider (ASP) with a rich and powerful application suite of office efficiency tools which, includes email, calendaring, directory, contacts, to-do's, notes, forum, and Web site editing tools. Using the HotDesk application suite is much more cost effective than our competitors in the Web building business.

Q: I have seen other services that offer designs templates. Is my design going to look like another?

A: With the HotDesk application you have the ability to customize your site the way you want it to look. You can make subtle edits to any design, change the color, text and the layout for example. With almost unlimited options, it is unlikely that your site will look like anyone elses.

A: Yes! You can access your HotDesk site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as many times as you want, as often as you want, from any Windows based computer in the world with high speed Internet access.

Q: Can we see statistics to see how much activity our site is receiving?

A: Yes, As an administrator of your site you can view statistics that are updated everyday.

Q: How can I increase traffic to my site?

A: The most effective tool for getting traffic to your site is marketing the site. Use your Web site to supplement other advertising. Just like a retail store, if people do not know you are there, they are not going to stop by. HotDesk helps you to get your site listed in search engines and directories such as Excite, Lycos, AltaVista, Google and Yahoo! by entering keywords in certain areas of your Web pages so that there is a better chance for them to be found during a search. Q: What are the system requirements to use HotDesk?

A: The system requirements are as follows:
* A PC running Windows 98/ME/NT/2000 or XP
* Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 and up
* A high speed Internet connection

Q: Which browsers do you support?

A: To edit the content of your HotDesk web site you need Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher.

Q: Can I use a Mac to edit my web page?

A: No. We stopped maintaining the Macintosh port until the Macintosh browsers progress to the same quality as the PC browsers. So it is not possible to use an Apple system to manage the Web site. You need to use a PC with Windows 98 or better.

Domain Name

Q: Who do you recommend I use to register a domain name?

A: We recommend you use Register.com however, you can use other registrars is you wish. Contact support@hotdesk.com prior to making any changes to your domain name so that we can make sure the name points to your site.

Q: Can I transfer or delegate my existing domain name?

A: Yes. To transfer or delegate your existing domain name, contact support@hotdesk.com so that we can instruct you on what to do to make the domain transfer seamless.

Q: Can I use my existing domain name as the address of my HotDesk Web site?

A: Yes. If you already have a registered domain name, we can transfer it to your HotDesk site. For more information, contact the HotDesk Support Center at support@hotdesk.com.

HotDesk Performance

Q: What kind of backup and redundancy do you have in place for your data?

A: All our servers have redundant power supplies, CPU's and all disk configurations run in a RAID 1 configuration. RAID 1 means that all disks in the system operate in pairs. All operations are performed to both disks so that the failure of one disk will not cause any loss of data.

Q: What level of security does HotDesk provide?

A: HotDesk uses the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol to encrypt all sensitive information that is submitted within our product and our Web site.

Q: What language is your software written in?

A: Our applications are written in two separate languages. IncTools, our Intranet application, is partly written using Application Server Pages (ASP) and partly in Java (we are currently porting from ASP to Java incrementally). Our Web development application is written primarily in Java though some of the functionality, such as the pop up menus within the edit mode, is written in JavaScript - which is not related to Java.

Q: If I need support, will HotDesk be there for me?

A: The HotDesk support team has developed a complete online help document for your use to assist in any function in our suite of applications. If you cannot find the answer to your question or if you desire guidance, the HotDesk support hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8:00AM through 6:00PM mountain time. Free email support is available at support@hotdesk.com or you can purchase a support care subscription.

Online Store

Q: Can HotDesk process online commerce transactions?

A: HotDesk performs transaction processing for our merchants through our partner Paymentech and we provide alternative payment mechanisms that facilitate noncredit-card transactions as well.

Q: Can I use my current merchant account with HotDesk?

A: Yes. If you take orders online the account information will be sent to you via a secure form and you can manually enter the order information with your current merchant account. However, if you want to accept and process credit card transactions within your HotDesk store automatically, you need to use our online merchant account partner, Paymentech.
